Unit 2 Reflection

AI and Impact on Literature Reflection

For this project, I decided to focus on AI and its impact on literature for current and future writers. At first I wanted to look at the connection between AI and coding since that more accurately applies to my major, but I felt for a writing class, it would be perfect to focus on the impacts AI has on writing!

It was relatively easy to choose my audience for this project because my motivating questions behind my research was toward the perspective of writers. I implemented logos to create logical arguments so my audience can understand the meaning behind my research.

In this project, I definitely challenged myself by reading about a topic I do not know well. I initially wanted it to be somewhat related to the field I know well; statistics. Although that was my initial plan, I wanted to expand my horizons and research something I am unfamiliar with which is literature and AI.

While doing my research, I found many articles about this topic. I thought this was because of how prevalent AI has become. With more people using AI generators, the smarter it continues to get. AI has personally scared me because I get worried about how powerful it will continue to get. This seems to be a popular feeling as there was a lot of articles about how AI can affect the jobs of writers and future writers. The quality of the articles varies as they do with different topics as well. I did notice there was a lot of articles from .edu and .gov sites and was not limited to an absurd amount of .com websites and articles. Throughout my research, my beliefs about this topic has not swayed from how I initially felt. At first I felt as if AI is taking away the creativity from writers. Although some articles I looked at said to view AI as a tool, it still seems as if AI has the ability to take over jobs. The articles could have improved by including data about jobs that may have been overtaken by AI. Although I don't see this happening until the near future since AI is still quite new and has not made too much of a difference in the work field. Once it starts to impact more jobs, these authors can come back and compare research analysis to their previous article that they had written.

As for engaging my audience, I believe I did a good job engaging. Whenever I were to ask someone within my close circle about their opinion on AI and writing, they all had the same reaction, "oooh that's important". This is a very relevant topic that seems to engage the audience because of how important it is now. For my intended audience, I did not receive a response back regarding my pitch. Although when I asked and showed my project to my cousin, a writer in Mexico, he found it interesting. He said that AI definitely has affected the jobs of many in his field because for simple articles, AI is much quicker than a human. AI can generate a short article in a fraction of the time that a human could. The only catch is that AI does not have a human point of view which can easily be differentiated. This cannot be replicated. AI can not have the empathy or wisdom that a human obtains which is critical for writing. My cousin noted that the author's tone is critical for a good passage. This way, the words on the paper can connect the author and the audience.

Since my major includes a lot of research and analysis, I definitely could include some of the techniques I used for this class in my other classes. For example, many of my classes use R software. For a project, with a given dataset, I could use statistical analysis to compare to other statistical findings about the same topic from someone else. This was a vague example, but I could definitely find reliable sources and do my own research based on others' findings. Also beyond college, I plan to do something with sports data analysis. Research techniques are definitely going to be needed for this job since it will be my job to do research on a certain subject, let's say the opposing team and do statistical analyses about their tendencies. This is definitely a dream of mine. I would need to display my findings in a way to engage my audience which would be the team I work for. This way they would look forward to my scouting reports and find my work useful.

  1. AI is great and I use it all the time. But it kindof scares me.

Unit 1 Draft

Source #1   Article: “A Pencil Shop, for Texting the Old-Fashioned Way”   Author: Molly Young     Photo: https://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/21/fashion/a-pencil-shop-for-texting-the-old-fashioned-way.html   This article looked at a unique store in Lower Manhattan that sold only pencils. It highlights the passion the owner, Caroline Weaver, has for something that most people would describe as dull. Pencils are overlooked, not used, and some may describe them as out of date. Although the author took on a challenge by choosing this store to write about. Young chose this and wrote to try and capture how something mundane as a pencil shop can be compelling. It is not jus t about how a store only sells pencils; it is about how there is something captivating about a unique passion. Especially since Young dug further to see the uniqueness of the shop, its meaning to the owner, and its effect on others.   The genre of this article is a display of journalism b...

Unit 2 Library

For my library experience, I went to Bird Library on campus to check out a book called "The History of Popes" by Ludwig von Pastor. This book stuck out to me because I just recently watched the movie Conclave  which was very interesting to me.  Regarding technology, it certainly affects my relationship with the library because I almost never go and check out a book there unless I am told to. If I need a book, my first step is to look online for a free version online, then if I cannot do that, I look somewhere else online for cheap purchase. I never go to a library to see if they have a physical book there.  Especially with a book like "The History of Popes", that is something I would just look up on my own instead of going to the library to read a book about the popes from 1755 to 1799. This book struck my interest because it is not something that I know a ton about. I am very into my faith and devoted to living according to my morals. Although I do not know much ab...

Graphic Novels

I chose the "Nat Turner" graphic novel by Kyle Baker because I am interested in history. I have read similar passages in one of my english classes last year and just wanted to expand on my knowledge on this. Since it is a graphic novel, I read the entire book because it was a very easy read.  The book started by showing how slaves were taken from their homeland and brought to the US on the ships. This graphic novel encapsulates the inhumane conditions the slaves had to endure. At one point, there was a baby thrown overboard on the ship which is very unfortunate. It then shows how brutal the slaves were treated on the plantations as well. There were some graphics like being whipped and the overseers would throw salt on the wounds. Throughout this imagery, the novel shows the slaves conspiring a rebellion. Through their facial expressions and their sneaky actions. It then goes into their rebellion. One particular scene that caught my attention was when the slaves contemplated k...
