Unit 1 Reflection

Why do I need a technical writer? Shea ...

https://www.sheaws.com/benefits-of-using-a-technical-writer/

The inquiry of this class emphasized how writing and technology are related. Moreover, in today’s modern world, technology is in almost every aspect of our lives. From the moment we wake up, the first thing most people do is go on their phones. When people go to sleep, usually the last thing they do is scroll on their phones. Technology consumes humans.

After completing all of my source analysis, I look back at this inquiry with an expanded idea of technology’s effect on writing. My sources were high quality and varied in genres from school journalism to research papers. All were found from the Syracuse library database which generated a plethora of articles from more casual writings to peer-reviewed papers. I chose these sources because two of them stuck with me for the culture that was displayed in them. For example, the paper by CE Noticias Financieras talked about “The corrido tumbado [...] is directly linked to the corrido norteño.” The corrido norteño genre is one that I grew up on and corridos tumbados is a genre I actively listen to today. This made this particular source stand out to me because it had a differing view on this genre. Another source I chose highlighted the effects AI language models like Chat GPT have on scientific writing. Benichou stated that “analysis of our results shows that ChatGPT can generate sections of medical scientific articles of comparable quality to that produced by human authors. Sections generated were clear, precise and consistent. In terms of speed, ChatGPT outperformed human authors by generating sections significantly faster.” This source stood out to me because it analyzes a very hot and controversial topic in society today; AI language models and how it will affect the work force. This source was a peer-reviewed research paper that I chose because of its concise and interesting topic. It also directly aligns with our inquiry for this class.

For this project, I used technology by looking up my sources in the Syracuse library database. Without using this database, I would have totally different sources and potentially not as credible on top of that. Relating to my AI source, I used Google Gemini to ask a very simple medical question, “Are auto immune disorders more common in males than females?” Although this is not something I will be making the AI language model write a research paper on, I was just curious to see how detailed its response would be since I knew it would be quick. The response gave me an answer, reasons to back it up, counter evidence, and sources referenced. This gave me an idea of how quick AI language models can generate research ideas.

The sources I chose ranged in credibility from student journalism in a school paper to research. For the student journalism paper, I could add my own research since there are many access points for me to evaluate the content of that paper in my hometown. In other words, the journalism paper looked at the passion of the Latino community for their lowriders that would be displayed at an event. Back at home for me, I have easy access to lowrider culture in Los Angeles, California where cruising was made legal again on Whittier Boulevard, a historic spot. I could conduct my own research on how passion for seemingly mundane things affects those who may not understand the interest.

I could see myself using some of these sources for Unit 2 and 3 because they continue to relate to our inquiry of this class. I see myself using the ChatGPT paper because of well it aligns with the two other unit assignments. For the other sources, I can see myself using sources related to those topics like music and community, but maybe not those specific papers.

During this unity, I challenged myself to think deeper. To think deeply about topics, I may not have really put much thought into before. For example, generative AI. Obviously, I am aware of it, but I did not think too much about how it can do jobs quicker than humans and potentially as accurate as humans on top of that. Moreover, I challenged myself to try and connect the idea of passion to every source I chose. The pencil shop article got me to thinking of passion about seemingly mundane things and I wanted to use that idea to find other sources.

Unit 1 Draft

Source #1   Article: “A Pencil Shop, for Texting the Old-Fashioned Way”   Author: Molly Young     Photo: https://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/21/fashion/a-pencil-shop-for-texting-the-old-fashioned-way.html   This article looked at a unique store in Lower Manhattan that sold only pencils. It highlights the passion the owner, Caroline Weaver, has for something that most people would describe as dull. Pencils are overlooked, not used, and some may describe them as out of date. Although the author took on a challenge by choosing this store to write about. Young chose this and wrote to try and capture how something mundane as a pencil shop can be compelling. It is not jus t about how a store only sells pencils; it is about how there is something captivating about a unique passion. Especially since Young dug further to see the uniqueness of the shop, its meaning to the owner, and its effect on others.   The genre of this article is a display of journalism b...

Unit 2 Library

For my library experience, I went to Bird Library on campus to check out a book called "The History of Popes" by Ludwig von Pastor. This book stuck out to me because I just recently watched the movie Conclave  which was very interesting to me.  Regarding technology, it certainly affects my relationship with the library because I almost never go and check out a book there unless I am told to. If I need a book, my first step is to look online for a free version online, then if I cannot do that, I look somewhere else online for cheap purchase. I never go to a library to see if they have a physical book there.  Especially with a book like "The History of Popes", that is something I would just look up on my own instead of going to the library to read a book about the popes from 1755 to 1799. This book struck my interest because it is not something that I know a ton about. I am very into my faith and devoted to living according to my morals. Although I do not know much ab...

Graphic Novels

I chose the "Nat Turner" graphic novel by Kyle Baker because I am interested in history. I have read similar passages in one of my english classes last year and just wanted to expand on my knowledge on this. Since it is a graphic novel, I read the entire book because it was a very easy read.  The book started by showing how slaves were taken from their homeland and brought to the US on the ships. This graphic novel encapsulates the inhumane conditions the slaves had to endure. At one point, there was a baby thrown overboard on the ship which is very unfortunate. It then shows how brutal the slaves were treated on the plantations as well. There were some graphics like being whipped and the overseers would throw salt on the wounds. Throughout this imagery, the novel shows the slaves conspiring a rebellion. Through their facial expressions and their sneaky actions. It then goes into their rebellion. One particular scene that caught my attention was when the slaves contemplated k...
