Article: “A Pencil Shop, for Texting the Old-Fashioned Way”

This article looked at a unique store in Lower Manhattan that sold only pencils. It highlights the passion the owner, Caroline Weaver, has for something that most people would describe as dull. Pencils are overlooked, not used, and some may describe them as out of date. Although the author took on a challenge by choosing this store to write about. Young chose this and wrote to try and capture how something mundane as a pencil shop can be compelling. It is not just about how a store only sells pencils; it is about how there is something captivating about a unique passion. Especially since Young dug further to see the uniqueness of the shop, its meaning to the owner, and its effect on others.

The genre of this article is a display of journalism because the author utilizes interviewed questions for this story. The author effectively displayed how something as simple as a pencil shop can be a symbol for following a passion even if it may only appeal to a small minority of individuals.

How It Connects to Our Inquiry?

Article: Low-Riders Raise Funds for Raza Grad”

This article covers a classic car show that included lowriders, a staple in Chicano/Mexican American culture. The author of this writing was a student who wrote this to convey news about the event taking place.

This passage highlights the cultural significance of these lowriders, even though to other cultures, it may not seem as important. Doss uses descriptions like “lowriders are a class of highly modified cars, with suspension designed to raise and lower to extreme degrees.” Lowriders in the Latino community are a staple that represented creativity and self-expression. In modern years, the continuation of lowriders is a representation of honoring previous generations within the community as well.

The author chose to write about this event because it is a representation of cultural pride in an area of Southern California that has a large population of Latinos. Doss later stated, “Lowrider culture is meant to be a departure from vehicular norms.” These cars are highly significant for the individuals within the community, but because of their intricate designs, everyone can enjoy them, not just Latinos.

How It Connects to Our Inquiry?

This student’s article is a documentation of a cultural event. As a writer in modern times, this documentation of a cultural event can reach a wider audience through technology. Lowriders are an aspect of Latino culture and passion that may not be perceived the same way to others outside of the community. Although it is a niche passion, this article documented and praised a cultural event that could be shared to a broader audience.

Article: “Corridos Tumbados, Music of A Generation with No Future, Says Researcher”

This article looks at the newly popular corridos tumbados and its effect on younger generations in the social context. Artists like Peso Pluma and Natanael Cano have rose to fame in the past couple of years with their modern Mexican style of music that has been at the top of the music charts. Although the genre has performed well and given much success to its artists, it is not the most loved by all because it is often about drugs, alcohol and material possessions

This is a work of journalism that comments on another work done by an author, Jose Valenzuela. The author chose to write on this because of the many controversial opinions on this topic. The genre itself is controversial because of its messages and the author adds to the debate on whether it deserves its success.

While it is controversial, the overall theme I am looking at in my research is passion. Passion plays a key role in the artists’ love in their songs that expresses their lifestyle, experiences, and creativity. The passion of its audience also plays a key role in the success of the genre. Peso Pluma is consistently on Billboard’s Top 100 Artists even though he just started making music in 2020. This genre of music has quickly become mainstream but has also experienced its controversy while maintaining a broader audience.

How It Connects to Our Inquiry?

Corridos Tumbados demonstrate passion from both the artists and the fans. The songwriting itself is a display of passionate writing even with controversial outside noise. It connects to technology because music is streamed on online platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and Pandora. On these platforms, Corridos Tumbados artists have had major success, which has displayed how although controversial, people like what they like. This genre continues to gain more popularity and increasing amount of streams online.

Article: “The Role of Using ChatGPT AI in Writing Medical Scientific Articles”

ChatGPT Is a Game-Changer. Here's How ...

This article analyzes the role of ChatGPT, a common and globally used AI language model in writing scientific and academic articles. The author took on this project to look at the potential effects AI would have on scientific writing that could eventually increase in the future as the language model gets smarter. AI language models like Chat GPT are much faster than humans writing scientific or academic journals.

The key findings of this article looked at how ChatGPT gave comparable data and writing to those written by humans who conducted the research themselves. This suggests that ChatGPT could be more efficient compared to a human doing this job. Although efficiency was perceived, the author emphasizes that it is crucial to still have human writers because AI is not fully trustworthy. Simply, it is still a developing language model. This suggests that AI language models can aid in the process of academic writing, but should not replace humans in doing this job.

How It Connects to Our Inquiry?

Our inquiry looks at technology and writing. This article directly highlights the correlation between these two concepts with AI. Scientific writing is a tedious process that displays the passion for the researcher. Passion that not many people understand. Although AI creates comparable scientific writing to humans, it is imperative that researchers continue to follow their passion of writing because this genre of writing is an important element of scientific communication.

Unit 2 Library

For my library experience, I went to Bird Library on campus to check out a book called "The History of Popes" by Ludwig von Pastor. This book stuck out to me because I just recently watched the movie Conclave  which was very interesting to me.  Regarding technology, it certainly affects my relationship with the library because I almost never go and check out a book there unless I am told to. If I need a book, my first step is to look online for a free version online, then if I cannot do that, I look somewhere else online for cheap purchase. I never go to a library to see if they have a physical book there.  Especially with a book like "The History of Popes", that is something I would just look up on my own instead of going to the library to read a book about the popes from 1755 to 1799. This book struck my interest because it is not something that I know a ton about. I am very into my faith and devoted to living according to my morals. Although I do not know much ab...

Graphic Novels

I chose the "Nat Turner" graphic novel by Kyle Baker because I am interested in history. I have read similar passages in one of my english classes last year and just wanted to expand on my knowledge on this. Since it is a graphic novel, I read the entire book because it was a very easy read.  The book started by showing how slaves were taken from their homeland and brought to the US on the ships. This graphic novel encapsulates the inhumane conditions the slaves had to endure. At one point, there was a baby thrown overboard on the ship which is very unfortunate. It then shows how brutal the slaves were treated on the plantations as well. There were some graphics like being whipped and the overseers would throw salt on the wounds. Throughout this imagery, the novel shows the slaves conspiring a rebellion. Through their facial expressions and their sneaky actions. It then goes into their rebellion. One particular scene that caught my attention was when the slaves contemplated k...
